jpg : Java Glossary

jpg
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) A compressed file format Java uses primarily for photographs. Such files usually have a *.jpg extension. Unlike *.gif, JPEGs never had patent problems. For photographs, JPEGs are more compact that *.png files but less compact that WIF (Wavelet Image Files) files. Compactness is important since it reduces download time over the net. JPEGs are not good at line art. There you use *.gif or *.png. JPEG JPEG 2000, *.jp2 files, support transparency, but you don’t see them often. Axialis icon editor supports them. See the source code for Cropper to see how to load, crop, scale and save a *.jpg file.
