dongle : Computer Hardware Buyers’ Glossary

dongle
a device you plug into a USB (Universal Serial Bus) port or parallel port that acts like key to let you run some particular software. The idea is to prevent you from copying it and giving it to others. You can make all the backup copies you want. They are useless unless you have the corresponding dongle.
