xmlns : Java Glossary

xmlns
XMLNS (XML Name Space). It is an attribute in XML (extensible Markup Language) documents, a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) that points to the formal grammar of the given XML document. These formal definitions are called namespaces because the define the meanings of the various named tags. The grammar itself is defined by the XML spec. There are a number of different schemes (called schemas) for defining the structure.

Here is an example of xmlns being used in a SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) XML request.
