Safari

Apple’s browser than is four times faster than Internet Explorer at rendering web pages. It is a stripped down browser with few configuring options. It would be best suited to a novice. The current version is 5.1.7 Last revised/verified: 2012-08-02, and works on both Macs and PCs (Personal Computers). You can download it free. Safari gives you simple tools to zoom in and out to correct too small or too big typo on website. Safari gives you only a handful of preferences options.

Advantages

It has a HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) viewer and a save-as.
Developers can write extensions using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.

Disadvantages

You can’t get it to launch your favourite editor to edit the HTML.
It is a bit slower than the competition starting up.
It does not have themes/skins, though extensions can change the look.
Safari under XP does not display arrow characters correctly, even when it has the necessary fonts.
When you access local files you cannot type things like E:\mindprod\jgloss\jgloss.html. Instead you must type file:///E:/mindprod/jgloss/jgloss.html.
Safari downloads often appear not to work. The problem is the download dialog window is hidden. If you aren’t careful you will get dozens of downloads of the same file going at once. It does not warn you.
Safari downloads don’t by default let you chose where to keep them.
Safari does not automatically upgrade or even have button to let you check for updates. You have no notice the new version manually, then download the new version and reinstall the whole thing.

Those browsers marked with an x all have a bug. They will not render <col class="xxxx">s correctly. The ones with a tick render it correctly. The Opera people say this is a feature not a bug. The language lawyers claim the W3 spec says that the browser is supposed to ignore the color attribute from the <col class. Logically, I think the <col styles should apply to the entire column, but not to <th rows. In addition Firefox, SeaMonkey, Safari and Flock also ignore the <col align attribute. Opera and IE render it properly.

Firefox, SeaMonkey and Opera support almost all the HTML5 entities. Chrome and Safari support many of them.

If both cells in the left hand Style Test column are the same colour, then your browser (the one you are using now to view this page) supports <col class=.

If both cells in the right hand Alignment Test column right-align, then your browser supports <col align= correctly.

Dreamweaver lets you apply a css style to all rows individually. Last revised/verified: 2013-04-14

Tips

To set the home page in preferences, use the form: file:///E:/mindprod/jgloss/jgloss.html not E:\mindprod\jgloss\jgloss.html
By default there is no home button. You can add one: click the gear at the top right ⇒ click customise toolbar ⇒ drag the home icon on to the tool bar.

Safari also refers to O’Reilly Books online book division. You can pay to read their books online. This is quite a bit cheaper than purchasing paper books.
