ordinal : Java Glossary

ordinal
In English, the words first, second, third are called ordinals, referring to some thing’s place in an ordering. This contrasts with the words one, two, three, which refer to abstract quantities, called cardinals.

In Java, the term ordinals are zero based, e.g. the first enum, or first element of a List is ordinal 0.

In Modula, cardinals are the unsigned ints and ordinals are the signed ints.
