A portable assembler language. It is procedural without classes. It later evolved into C++. It is still used for writing device drivers. Java inherited its complex precedence structure. Using JNI (Java Native Interface), Java can call C/C++ methods and vice versa.

This slim book briskly describes the C language. The book is considered a classic for brevity and clarity. C is a relatively simple language, so does not require a massive book to describe it. This book works reasonably well as a tutorial, though it is intended as a reference.
