BlueTooth : Java Glossary

BlueTooth logo BlueTooth
A wireless low-power radio-frequency local area network for handhelds, computers and home appliances. Even your wireless headset could be a BlueTooth device. BlueTooth has a range of only about 6 metres (19.69 ft). It can set up an asymmetric channel with 721 kilobits per second (Kbps) in one direction, with 57.6 Kbps in the other or a symmetric channel with 433 Kbps in both directions. Compare that with 100,000 Kbps second for an Ethernet LAN (Local Area Network). The big advantage of BlueTooth is its automatic connection and configuration. All you have to do to communicate is get two devices is reasonable proximity. BlueTooth is primarilty used in cell phones and PDAs. You might use a BlueTooth headset in conjuction with a cell phone. That way you get the high power cell phone transmitter further away from your head. Every time you can double the distance you reduce any harm by a factor of four.
