PostScript : Computer Hardware Buyers’ Glossary

PostScript
PostScript printers have intelligence. The computer can send them a compact computer program mathematically describing the image to produce, then the printer itself composes the tiny dots that form the image, and prints it. In contrast, with most non-Postscript printers, the computer has to compose the dots, then labouriously send the millions upon millions of them over to the printer. If you send the same PostScript computer program to a typesetter, you will get the same results, except with finer detail. With a non-PostScript printer there will be many small differences, including different line endings and page breaks.
