Yahoo groups are sort of electronic clubs that Yahoo hosts. Yahoo provides the following services:

send and receive Yahoo! groups messages
upload and download files
chat
photos
polls
calendar, with reminders
mini databases up to 1000 rows by 10 columns. Data entry by all group members simultaneously. Data validation policies on each column.
member profiles

There are thousands of clubs, managed by people with no computer experience. Yahoo has done a remarkable job of making this technology available to the average human.

Unfortunately the service is unreliable and the software buggy. Further, you expose yourself to being spammed to death.
