source : Java Glossary

source
Source code is what the programmer writes, the *.java files. It is for programmer-to-computer and programmer-to-programmer communication. Javac.exe converts it into class file the java.exe JVM (Java Virtual Machine) uses. The class files have the comments removed and also the names of the local variables, though they retain the names of methds and fields.

You can find the source code for most of Sun’s Java classes in J:\Program Files\java\jdk1.7.0_04\src.zip.
