seal : Java Glossary

seal
The term seal is used in two senses:
  1. to lock, to make read-only, to prevent further changes. Using the keyword final seals a variable’s value. This is analogous to sealing a letter with wax and a signet ring imprint. If somebody tampers with the letter, the seal will be broken.
  2. to encapsulate a serialised object in a cryptographic covering so that its confidentiality is preserved. An object is serialised, encrypted and made a field of a carrier object.
