scalar : Java Glossary

scalar
In computer science terminology, a scalar is a single value, as opposed to a vector, or array of values. A vector computer works on long lists of numbers in parallel. An ordinary scalar computer works with one element at a time. Rarely you will hear the term scalar used where most people would use the term primitive, to refer to primitive types like byte, char, short, int, long, float and double, but not String.

In SQL (Standard Query Language), a scalar function returns a single number as opposed to a row or row set.
