Ruby : Java Glossary

Ruby
An object-oriented language out of Japan, similar to Java and Smalltalk but with more syntactic sugar to let you write programs more tersely. It is less strictly typed than Java. Reflection, HashMaps and regexes are built-in to the language. You can dynamically create new classes and add new methods to existing classes. Everything is an object. It does not make the distinction between primitives (int) and objects (Integer) that Java does.

Ruby lets you access instance variables only through getter and setter methods, but it will create them for you with minimal code, and it lets you invoke a setter as if it were an ordinary variable, much the way you can in Delphi. This makes it easy to add complex setter code later without having to change any client code.
