Perl
Out of a personal distaste for its syntax, I have long resisted even putting an entry for the Perl language in the Java glossary. It is an interpreted language, designed mainly for small string handling jobs tackling the same problem domain as AWK. You can think of it is as like a more serious bat or bash command language, but still not quite a grown-up language.
