parity
Modems often use a crude error detecting mechanism by adding an extra bit to each character sent, so that the number of ones is always even. If static noise reverses one of the bits, the result will no longer have an even number of ones in it and the receiving end will know something has gone wrong. The Intel Pentium CPU (Central Processing Unit) has instructions JPE and JPO to test the parity of a 32 bit chunk without having to programmatically examine the bits individually.
