OPENGL (Open Graphics Library) is a standard specification defining a cross-language, cross-platform API (Application Programming Interface) for writing applications that produce 2D and 3D computer graphics. Video cards now implement the 250 function calls in a combination of hardware, firmware and software device drivers. It is similar to the Java Graphics2D library. It competes with Direct3D on Microsoft Windows platforms.
