JOP : Java Glossary

JOP
JOP (Java Optimised Processor) Open source plans for a working Java CPU (Central Processing Unit) that runs the JVM (Java Virtual Machine) directly in silicon. JOP is the implementation of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) as concrete machine in hardware. The design has been sucessfully implemented in low cost FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) devices from Altera (ACEX 1K50, Cyclone) and Xilinx (Spartan II and Spartan-3).

JOP is slower than PicoJava II, and is slower than the Jazelle used in hand helds. Its forté is its tiny size and low power consumption, making it suited for embedded applications.
