init: routine that gets run only once at the beginning of an Applet. There are a number of things you can’t do in init because the Applet is not sufficiently started at the time init is called. For example, getSize will tell you that you have zero room to work in. In a similar vein, createImage will work in init but not in a static intitialiser.
