the process of figuring out which component an event is destined for, e.g. analysing the x,y coordinates of a mouse click to figure out in which panel and in which component in the panel the user clicked the mouse. This process is handled by the native GUI (Graphic User Interface), not the AWT (Advanced Windowing Toolkit) or application code.
