Canada Pensions

Canada has a famous social safety net. It consists of many parts, most importantly:

Provincial Plans

Welfare (below subsistence) given to the chronically unemployed.
Disability give to those with physical or mental disability that prevents them from working. This stops at age 65.

Federal Plans

Disability given to those with physical or mental disability that prevents them from working.
Unemployment Insurance give to those recently unemployed to contributed premiums.
Old Age Pension given to any citizen over 65.
Canada Pension Plan given to those who contributed during their working years starting at age 65.
Old Age Guaranteed Income Supplement given to those without other sources of income starting at age 65.

You must apply for any of these pensions independently. You cannot get both the federal and provincial disability pension. The requirements for the federal disability pension are stricter and you must apply multiple times.

Medical coverage is handled provincially. You pay a sliding scale premium from to a each month and show your card when you visit a doctor or a hospital. You never see a bill. The scheme is further subsidised from general revenue. Because of the sliding scale fees, no one is ever turned away from doctor or denied treatment in a hospital because they cannot pay.
