PIO : Computer Hardware Buyers’ Glossary


PIO (Programmed Input/Output). A slow form of I/O where the cpu has to spoon feed the peripheral a byte or word at a time. The standard DMA (Direct Memory Access) controller is so incredibly slow that, PIO is faster for hard disk access.
