video hosting : Java Glossary

video hosting

Normally you don’t host video on your ordinary server. It requires specialised software to stream videos and high bandwidth and massive amounts of disk storage. Normally you farm this out to other servers. You can, however, serve them for download and later playing without any special software on your server. Real time broadcast requires yet another level of special software. Some are free, with restrictions. Others charge a monthly fee.

Most commonly video is served in flash, MPEG-4, or HTML5 (Hypertext Markup Language v 5) and audio in MP3 format.
