Santa Claus: aka St. Nicholas and Father Christmas. The patron saint of consumerism, greed and conspicous waste. A fat old man who insists children sit on his lap even if they don’t want to. A stranger who gives children candy and who sneaks into their bedrooms at night. No wonder kids are so afraid of him.
On the other hand, nearly all adults acknowledge the Santa Claus myths to be bogus. When children are disillusioned it teaches them to be cautious about believing other similar fantastic myths, e.g. walking on water, or a flood that covered the highest mountains.
