Donald Strachey
There is a wonderful series of movies, roughly modelled on the Thin Man series. A gay couple Donald Strachey (played by Chad Allen) and Timmy Callahan (played by Sebastian Spence) solve crimes with a gay twist. They have a comfortable domesticity. The movie series include: Ice Blues, On the Other Hand, Death, Shock to the System and Third Man Out. These are probably the most accurate fictional depictions of what it is like being gay.

When the residents of a neighborhood are offered huge sums of money to sell their homes to a developer, the only ones to refuse are an elderly lesbian couple, featuring an inspired performance by Margot Kidder. Soon after, the couple’s home is besieged by anti-gay vandalism, but Strachey suspects that the attack is motivated by big-business rather than homophobia.

Murder mystery that deals in a remarkably unbiased way with groups that claim to convert gays to straight or to aid them to avoid gay sex, and pass as straight. It also explores the pressures bigoted families place on their gay members. It explores some of the anguish gays go through when they hide their sexuality and when they don’t.

Murder mystery where Strachey is commissioned to protect gay activist John Rutka, known for outing prominent citizens. Strachey abandons bodyguard duty when he feels that Rutka is staging the threats against him. When Rutka turns up dead, Strachey is faced with an extensive list of enemies all with enough motive to kill.
