MSFIX ***** last updated by 1996 Oct 23 by Roedy Green Purpose ******* Fixes the "packed file corrupt" problem when programs such as MS Mouse install, Flight Simulator, Video Seven Diagnostics, and PCTools load. The problem shows up only in some BIOSes. The cause of the problem is a bug in EXEPACK, a MICROSOFT program used to compress programs. A vendor of a program would likely use this program on his work before selling it to you. MSFIX is a kludge. DOS 5.0 comes with a similar kludge utility called LOADFIX. To permanently fix the bug, you have to UNexepack the offending program and pack it with something else like PkLite. V-Communications makes such an UN-exepack called UNPACKER. There is also a French free program called UpackExe. You might also want to experiment with IsA20On to see if this is really the cause of your problems. How It Works ************ The problem only shows up when the application programs load starting in first 64K of RAM. This will happen if you have only a few TSRs, or if your DOS is stripped down. MSFIX works by allocating just enough RAM to force DOS to load subsequent programs above the 64K boundary. Notes on Use ************ It does not hurt to run MSFIX more than once. If the the load point is already above 64K, MSFIX does nothing. NOTE: Do NOT use LOADHI from QEMM or 386MAX to load MSFIX into high RAM. If you do that it will have no effect -- harmful or beneficial. To avoid wasting RAM unnecessarily, load all your other TSRs first.
