You work to love everyone, even people who are rude to you, even Bill Gates, even the George Bush, even Al Gore, even Jerry Falwell, even arms dealers, even people who needlessly destroy forests, even terrorists, even burglars, even child molesters, even the warring Palestianians and Israelis, even people who kill whales for sport, even Democrats, even board members of multinational corporations, even currency speculators, even Republicans, even contrarians, even smokers, even flaky prophets, even people with no fixed address, even homosexuals, even Muslim fanatics, even bigots, even strangers, even liars, even shallow people, even insensitive people, even patronising people, even your parents, even vandals, even smug people, even your exes, even criminals, even cheaters, even people with kinky sexual tastes, even pompous windbags, even people with hideous physical and mental diseases, even prostitutes, even young people, even old people, even incompetent people, even incontinent people, even fat and skinny people, even spammers, even homophobes, even people who change their names, even prudes, even crazy people, even windup flight attendants with plastic smiles, even people who sulk and won’t tell you why, even people who refuse to participate in anything, even people with dorky haircuts, even power and ego trippers, even people of every possible colour including black and white, even people whose biological gender does not match the gender they feel inside, even vain people, even drug addicts, even evil people, even self-righteous people, even morons, even closet cases, even sneaky betrayers, even drug users, even Kristians, even Joe Blow, Joe Average, John Smith, Deborah Gray and Jane Doe, even the black sheep of your family, even Feng Shui practitioners, even racists, people who make up elaborate schemes to describe reality, even Texans, even people who mispronounce words, even people who believe in things science does not understand yet, even dolphins, even hicks, even yourself with all your private and public shortcomings, even St. Paul, even people you are afraid of, even people who threaten to kill you, even pompous asses, even terrorists, even people who bawl you out, even general Bullmooses — any sentient being. You must be getting the hang of it by now! Everyone means e v e r y  o n e, not just people in general.

Your involvement can be conditional, but never your love. If you aren’t in that loving state right now, it is because you have addictions. Use the other techniques to uplevel them to preferences. You can still work hard to block the foolish actions of other people while you love them.

The list two paragraphs back contains some of the people I sometimes forget to include in everyone. Feel free to add to it or make your own list.

Take a walk down a street or mall and marvel at what a varied collection of beings everyone includes.

Is this impractical? Look what a penniless frail old man like Gandhi was able to accomplish by rigorous application of this law. Gandhi said:

To see the universal and all-pervading Spirit of Truth, face to face, one must be able to love the meanest creation as oneself.

The fundamental point is that if you do not have the capacity to love yourself, then there is simply no basis on which to build a sense of caring toward others. Love for yourself does not mean that you are indebted to yourself. Rather, the capacity to love oneself or be kind to oneself should be based on a very fundamental fact of human existence: that we all have a natural tendency to desire happiness and avoid suffering. Once this basis exists in relation to oneself, one can extend it to other sentient beings.

In workshops I lead, I ask everyone to hug everyone. I often forget to mention that everyone includes themselves. I want people to get used to the idea it is not ok to leave anyone out.
