Here is an email I received in response to one of my essays.
So you tell me you found something that you could not identify, that was not considered important enough for the administration to crow about as the long promised weapons of mass destruction? So what?
I was never asked to do anything illegal or wrong for the 14 months I was there.
I think you missed the most important point. The U.N. declared the war illegal. You participated. Your participation was illegal. It does not matter if all you did was peel potatoes. You are a war criminal because you aided and abetted the war.
What I was asked to do was help build hospital and take care of Iraq’s that needed my help(medical help) I was a medic over there. We built schools hospitals and water plants so the people could better them selves. If you are in the Army for 6 years and still private then you was knocked down to that for doing something wrong. No one will start as a private and never move up in rank if they stay in the service that long. If it was not for people like me than you would be like the Iraq people poor, homeless and picked on by people in higher places. One last thing if any one comes over and starts to attack you don’t call on any of the services to protect you. Go to Iraq or some communist place and live with them.
There were Nazi medics and Nazi construction workers too, but that does not justify invading another country totally unprovoked using counterfeit evidence. I can’t imagine any parent welcoming you after your fellows had raped their child, or ripped his arms off with a cluster bomb, even if you did your best to bandage the stumps. Without the services of people like you, that war could not proceed. Even if you imagine your actions are pure virtue, they can’t possibly compensate for the horror your fellows have visited on Iraq with $250 billion worth of mayhem.
I wrote Universal Soldier in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It’s about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all.Donovan (1946-05-10 age:71) had a hit with it in 1965.
~ Buffy Sainte-Marie (1941-02-20 age:77)
He’s five feet two and he’s six feet four
He fights with missiles and with spears
He’s all of 31 and he’s only 17
He’s been a soldier for a thousand years
He’s a Catholic, a Hindu, an atheist, a Jain,
a Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew
and he knows he shouldn’t kill
and he knows he always will
kill you for me my friend and me for you
And he’s fighting for Canada,
he’s fighting for France,
he’s fighting for the USA,
and he’s fighting for the Russians
and he’s fighting for Japan,
and he thinks we’ll put an end to war this way
And he’s fighting for Democracy
and fighting for the Reds
He says it’s for the peace of all
He’s the one who must decide
who’s to live and who’s to die
and he never sees the writing on the walls
But without him how would Hitler have
condemned him at Dachau
Without him Caesar would have stood alone
He’s the one who gives his body
as a weapon to a war
and without him all this killing can’t go on
He’s the universal soldier and he
really is to blame
His orders come from far away no more
They come from him and you and me
and brothers can’t you see
this is not the way we put an end to war.
