Oil Heroin

I am baffled that anyone would ever take heroin. Surely potential users have seen others do so and how it takes over and ruins their lives. They must have a way of blanking out the negative consequences and focusing only on the short term pleasure.

Prime Minister Harper has the personality of a heroin addict. His idea of heaven is to sell off all the tar sands for fuel, releasing more CO₂ than released previously in all history. He squirms in pleasure at all the money he would get for doing that. He refuses to even consider the negative consequences of massive global frying from the CO₂ emissions:

• Killing off all the perennial vegetation on earth.
• Wiping out the coral reefs which are the nurseries for about half the world’s fish.
• Flooding most of the world’s agricultural land with rising oceans.
• Fossil fuels are a sunset technology. They are already rapidly being replaced in Germany by green energy. The world will abruptly abandon them entirely as soon as the cost of green energy drops below that of fossil fuels, or the world wakes up to the impending doom of climate change. Harper won’t get to sell the entire tar sands, but Canada will be left holding the bag for the entire mortgage on the infrastructure to extract them.
