The OED (Oxford English Dictionary) defines acronym this way: a word formed from the initial letters of other words: e.g. LASER. It defines initialism as an abbreviation formed of initial letters pronounced separately: e.g. BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). So it seems that initialisms are a subset of acronyms. Here I refer to both as acronyms.
