Impeachment

Presidents are not impeached when they commit serious crimes, but when the majority of senators and congressmen no longer want them to be president. They don’t even have to be convicted of a crime beyond a reasonable doubt. Nixon resigned to avoid impeachment. He faced Democratic majorities. Trump faces Republican majorities. Senators and Congressmen do a calculation, will my odds of reelection be improved or hurt if I move to impeach Trump? Because Trump’s base don’t care what crimes he commits, and because they believe any lies he tells them, Senators and Congressmen fear Trump attacking them during the next election.

If all goes well, disgust with Trump will gradually grow beyond a tipping point. Then we can expect most of the senators and congressmen to suddenly abandon Trump.
