On Oprah’s farewell show, she featured 200 men who had been abused as children. Each held a photo of themselves at the age the abuse began. To my astonishment, one young man held a photo of himself at about age 20. Another showed himself at his university graduation. This is not child abuse. This simple remorse and refusal to take responsibility for one’s actions. It is most likely Christian abuse, where Christians convince someone that some innocent sexual activity in the past was a monumental sin, and drive them psychotic over it. Lumping every sexual activity that Christians don’t approve of as child abuse weakens the meaning of child abuse. It undermines efforts to protect real children.
