womb : Java Glossary

womb
Sometimes called an application server or a container. A program that runs on a server that supports small Java servlet programs that process transactions. Also the part of a web browser that supports Applets. It may be the container that runs EJBs. It may be the hosting for PHP (Pre-Hypertext Processor) programs. It would also include HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) enhancers like Freemarker and JSP (Java Server Pages). Something that just hosted HTML or FTP (File Transfer Protocol) would be called a server, but not an application server.
