volser : Java Glossary

volser
A 32-bit binary volume serial number assigned to a floppy or hard drive partition when it is low-level formatted. Volume serial numbers on floppies are intended to be almost unique so that the OS (Operating System) can detect whether the floppy in a drive has been changed.

Don’t confuse this with the volume label, a case-sensitive name for a drive.

There is a third type of serial number, hard to get at, put there by the hard disk manufacturer called the manufacturer serial number.

Programatically you can discover the volume serial number with the C++ function GetVolumeInformation via JNI (Java Native Interface) using the CMP (Canadian Mind Products) Volser class.

You can also discover the volume label and volume serial number with a simple dir command at the Windows command prompt.
