template engine: A tool to help you dynamically generate HTML. You create boiler plate and fill in the blanks. You typically use custom Java Servlet code to fetch the data to fill in the blanks. Only the simple markup languages are usually referred to as template engines, though JSP and all its relatives are at heart just complicated template engines.
The template engine functionality allows you to compute values and plop them into slots in the HTML. JSP and many other engines also allow you to embed Java code, or to invoke taglib functions.
