Stamps.com : Java Glossary

a company who patented a scheme call E-stamps for printing US postage on envelopes using an ordinary laser printer. A two dimensional bar code encodes:

The destination ZIP Code.
The amount of postage applied.
The date and time the envelope was posted.
A digital signature so that the Post Office can validate the authenticity of the postage.

There is also a FIM barcode for sorting mail, and human-readable information such as the amount of postage and the originating city.

The cost is $173.00 USD per month flat fee which includes rental of a digital scale you attach you your computer. You buy postage with your credit card over the Internet. It is not clear if you must be connected to the Internet when printing postage. I suspect you don’t need to be connected expect when buying postage. This is less of an issue now dial up is going the way of all flesh.

I heard there is an equivalent program for Canadian postage, but I could find no mention of it on the official website. I put in an inquiry.
