Java detractors like to sneer that Java is only good for trinket applications, that no hard-headed company would use it for a serious application. Here are a few serious Java applications:

Limewire the most download application on the Internet.
Jetbrains IntelliJ Idea, NetBeans and Eclipse IDEs are written in Java.
Charles Schwab (Their Velocity trade product is written in Java).
Portfolio Director (Portfolio Gains, Option Money, Portfolio Director)
InteractiveBrokers (Their trade station is written in Java)
ThinkOrSwim (their trade station is written in java).
Moneydance

Kodak: All of the Kodak Digital Cinema operating system front end, and so far all of the back end are being done on Java and Linux. These have to pump immense digital video streams to the projectors.
SAP AG world’s largest enterprise software developer.
IBM Lotus Symphony: free office suite. The word processor is based on non-proprietry open document formats. Spreadsheet, presentation.

Most Java software you won’t see. It is server side, or custom-written for a single company. You also won’t notice it is Java when it is compiled with JET.
