OSGi Alliance : Java Glossary

OSGi Alliance
A standards group whose core is Sun, IBM (International Business Machines) and Ericsson. They are the ones responsible for the Java language standards and some other standards. The OSGi refuse to divulge what the acronym means claiming they have outgrown its original meaning. So, the official story is that it is just a name.

Despite what the Wikipedia says, UPnP (Universal Plug & Play) (as distinct from Plug & Play). is handled by the UPnP Forum, not the OSGi.

Most notably, they have produced package standards for managing large numbers of jars from different vendors, keeping track of which versions are present and which are compatible with each other. For some reason, they call jars bundles rather than jars. Eclipse uses this standard to keep track of its hundreds of jars and plugins. Knoplerfish is an implementation.
