mixed base : Java Glossary

mixed base
Humans like to create asymmetrical units of measure like yards/feet/inches, days/hours/minutes/seconds, degrees/minutes/seconds, gallons/quarts/pints/cups or cases/cartons/units.

To do conversions between the various level units is much like converting numbers between non-decimal bases, e.g. octal and hexadecimal. The key is using integer division and modulus. To see how it is done, look at the sample code for days/hours/minutes/seconds/microseconds.
