IMAP
A mail procotol not to be confused with MAPI, which is an obsolete Windows-only Outlook e-mail API, not a mailbox-accessing protocol. IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. IMAP is a method of accessing electronic mail or bulletin board messages that are kept on a (possibly shared) mail server. It works better than POP3 when you access your mail account from several different computers.

You can get a free account to experiment with IMAP from FastMail.
