DRM

Digital Restrictions Management. Schemes to allow you to for example to:

Download an MP3 song, but play it only on your computer or iPod. You can’t pass it on to anyone else.
Download an MP3 song, but play it only 3 times.
Download and use a computer program, but only on a computer with a given serial number.

These system are all ultimately doomed to failure since they rely only on software, which at some point must decrypt the content into usable from, and at which point it can be pirated and redistributed without the DRM.

However, from a practical point of view, Apple is making plenty of money with its iTunes/iPod and the AAC music format.
