The five CSS logical fonts cursive, fantasy, monospace, sans-serif, serif are guaranteed available in every browser. Note the names are slightly different from the logical fonts of last resort in Java : CSS ’s monospace vs Java Monospaced, sans-serif vs SansSerif and serif vs Serif. Make sure you specify these names without surrounding quotes. Further, make sure every font-family specification ends with one of these logical fonts so CSS will always have some available font to use for rendering.
