canonical : Java Glossary

canonical
If something can have a number of variant forms such as a file name or an URL (Uniform Resource Locator), the canonical form is the most official, standard, universal, complete, unambiguous, simple, understood, tidy — ideal. Computer scientists borrowed the term from mathematicians who in turn borrowed from the church where it means according to the church canons (laws).
