Apple bases their line around the technically superior, but Windows-incompatible, PowerPC cpu. Apple no longer maintains a significantly different MRJ Macintosh Runtime for Java — their switch to OS X has made porting Sun’s basic JDK a much better proposition. If you are serious about Java, you must upgrade to OS X.
