adoment
Fonts have a basic family name, e.g. Arial then various suffixes tacked on called adoments to indicate such things as font weight, italic, condensed, monospaced, characters suppported. A few of the common adoments are: Bitstream often adds the BT adoment. Esperanto fonts often add the Eo (the 2-character Esperanto language code) or sudEuro adoment. You can map various CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) attributes bold, italic, font-weight:700 etc. onto specific font variants with the @font-face style tag.

When you buy fonts, you typically buy just the variants you need. You don’t automatically get the bold and italic variants when you buy the base font.
