Gay Pride Parades
As chairman of G*A*T*E, I organised the first pride parade in Vancouver (I think it was 1973-08-08 plus or minus a year or two). For most of the participants it was their first gay demonstration. They were terrified they would be killed or beat up. They refused to march along the planned route.
Modern prides are completely different. That wild Mardi Gras atmosphere says Even when I act this outrageously, the Christian bigots cannot hurt me. It so exhilarating. The rest of the year, we are so suppressed. Only in safety of numbers can we let loose. Though I am embarrassed by some of the antics in pride parades, I would hate to see a return to the terror of the original.~ Roedy (1948-02-04 age:70)
