Excessive Goal Setting

Let us say that you make your life goal to be the richest person on earth, head of the U.N., the most famous movie star of all time, the person to win the most Olympic medals ever etc. Let’s say you fail. If you hold this demand addictively, you will suffer every day of your life, beating yourself up either because you have not yet met your goal or because it is obvious you never will. Let’s say you succeed. To do that you must be more obsessed that anyone else on earth. In other words, even if you win, you will be in some sense mentally ill and miserable. You will have bypassed all the other pleasures of life. Further, you will almost certainly have cheated, or done ethically questionable things in pursuit of your goal and will feel guilt for that.
