Xeon : Computer Hardware Buyers’ Glossary

Xeon
A line of Intel CPU (Central Processing Unit)s that spans quite a range of performance. The basic ones are a Pentium plus a SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) unit for parallel processing. Unfortunately the Sun Java processors don’t exploit this ability. You would have to write your own code in C and hook it into Java with JNI (Java Native Interface) to make use of it. Some Xeons are 32-bit only, and some also emulate the 64-bit AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) Opteron (or as Intel too embarrassed to admit it now produces clones, calls the EMT64T instruction set). The Opteron 64-bit set is quite different from Intel’s own Itanium 64-bit architecture. Some models support more one core (CPU hardware set) and they often use hyperthreading to simulate even more CPU cores than actually exist.
