S/PDIF

S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format) is an audio-only connector that provides multiple channels of audio in noise-free compressed digital form. There are both optical and coax versions. It is used to export sound from a computer to to a stereo, to deliver sound from a DVD (Digital Video Disk) player to a stereo, or to deliver sound from a DTV (Digital Television) box to a stereo. It transmits all channels over the same conductor using a digital packet format. It would typically be used for 6 channel, aka 5.1 giving Front L/R, Rear L/R, centre voice, center subwoofer.
