Internet Phone : Computer Hardware Buyers’ Glossary

Internet Phone
A telephone that uses the Internet to transmit voice. It may use a computer or an ordinary phone at either end. It might also use a cell phone or a special wireless digital appliance at either end. It is considerably cheaper than traditional long distance since you don’t tie up a virtual circuit for the duration of the call whether you are speaking or not and because compression reduces the amount of data transmitted. The problems are delays and poor sound quality. Computer-to-Computer connections can do video as well using nothing but software. You pay nothing other than your usual ISP (Internet Service Provider) connection.
